Choosing the wrong stabiliser type wastes capital. A servo unit on server racks has too slow a response; a static unit on cooling plant is over-specified and over-priced. Intellicon engineers match type to application at no charge.
Servo Voltage Stabilisers — 3-Phase
Servo stabilisers use a motorised auto-transformer to continuously track and correct output voltage. The motor-driven mechanism handles large load swings smoothly without saturating at high kVA ratings, making servo the preferred and most economical choice for data centre cooling plant — CRACs, chilled water pumps, cooling towers — where output voltage accuracy of ±1% is sufficient and cost per kVA must be minimised at high ratings.
Static Voltage Stabilisers — IGBT-Based
Static stabilisers replace the motorised mechanism with IGBT solid-state switching — achieving correction times under 1 millisecond. This prevents any sag or spike from reaching the UPS input, reducing battery cycle count and extending UPS battery life. Zero mechanical components means zero wear — ideal for unmanned colocation facilities where service access is scheduled quarterly at best. The higher per-kVA cost over servo is justified by the IT load's sensitivity and the maintenance elimination benefit.
Single-Phase Stabilisers
Individual stabilisers for the single-phase circuits that support data centre management infrastructure — KVM switches, console servers, out-of-band management (OOBM) systems, and physical security. Losing management access during a cooling plant voltage sag event leaves the data centre "blind" at exactly the moment remote intervention is most needed. Wall-mounted units fit directly into network racks or MDF rooms.
Servo vs Static — Side-by-Side
| Feature | Servo | Static IGBT |
|---|---|---|
| Correction speed | 15–40 V/sec (~20ms) | <1ms (instantaneous) |
| Output accuracy | ±1% | ±0.5% |
| Capacity range | 10 kVA – 500 kVA | 1 kVA – 200 kVA |
| Moving parts | Yes (motor + brushes) | None |
| Service interval | Every 2–3 years | Not required |
| Cost per kVA | Lower (above 20 kVA) | Higher |
| Best application | Cooling plant, UPS input | IT loads, server racks |
| Harmonic compatibility | Standard | High (handles non-linear loads) |
Stabiliser Events Logged in BMS — Automatically
Every voltage correction event is timestamped, magnitude-logged, and duration-recorded in the BMS historian. Weekly reports show voltage stability trends — identifying if UAE grid quality is deteriorating seasonally and if stabiliser capacity needs to be increased ahead of summer peak.
- ✓Input/output voltage trending every 30 seconds
- ✓Correction event log (magnitude + duration)
- ✓Load % and overload alarm
- ✓Motor temperature (servo) / heatsink temperature (static)
- ✓Automated weekly power quality email report
