Smart Metering & LoRaWAN
for UAE Buildings

Intellicon installs and integrates wireless smart metering systems for electricity, water, and chilled water across UAE commercial buildings. LoRaWAN gateways transmit meter data to dashboards and BMS platforms without the need for extensive wired infrastructure.

LoRaWAN can transmit compatible meter data to dashboards or third-party platforms. Billing use depends on the approved meter type, accuracy class, installation method, data validation, communication reliability, and client billing requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is LoRaWAN and how is it used for metering?

LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) is a wireless protocol designed for low-power, long-range IoT connectivity. In building metering, LoRaWAN gateways are installed on-site and compatible meters transmit consumption data wirelessly to a network server and then to a dashboard or integration platform. This avoids the need to run RS-485 Modbus wiring between every meter and a central controller.

Can LoRaWAN meter data be used for tenant billing?

LoRaWAN can transmit compatible meter data to dashboards or third-party platforms. Billing use depends on the approved meter type, accuracy class, installation method, data validation, communication reliability, and client billing requirements. Intellicon does not provide billing software or metrological certification — those are confirmed with the relevant authority and billing platform.

Which meters are compatible with LoRaWAN?

Meters with a built-in LoRaWAN module or an RS-485/Pulse output that can be connected to a LoRaWAN conversion module are compatible. Common types include electricity meters (kWh), water meters (m³), and BTU/energy meters for chilled water. Intellicon confirms meter compatibility with the LoRaWAN network server and dashboard before supply.

What is tenant sub-metering and why is it used?

Tenant sub-metering measures the electricity, water, or cooling consumption of individual tenants within a multi-tenanted building, independently of the main utility meter. It is used for cost allocation, energy transparency, and identifying high-consumption units. Intellicon installs and integrates sub-metering systems for commercial towers, villas, and mixed-use developments.

What is required for a smart metering installation?

A smart metering installation requires: a site survey to confirm meter locations and network coverage, confirmation of the utility metering policy with the building owner, selection of compatible meters and gateways, network server configuration, and dashboard setup. Meter installation in DEWA-governed circuits is subject to DEWA approval and approved contractor requirements.
