What is the difference between BACnet and Modbus?

BACnet (Building Automation and Control Networks) is an open ASHRAE standard designed specifically for building automation — it supports rich object models, alarms, trending, and scheduling. Modbus is a simpler serial or TCP protocol widely used in industrial devices, energy meters, and VFDs. Many building systems use both: BACnet for the BMS supervisory layer and Modbus for field devices and meters. Intellicon integrates both protocols and provides the gateway or controller to bridge them.

Can any brand of HVAC controller be integrated over BACnet?

Integration is subject to documented protocol availability, controller licensing, gateway compatibility, point-list review, network access, and third-party approval. Not all controllers expose their full BACnet point list — some require a vendor-specific licence. Intellicon confirms protocol access during the site survey before any integration is committed.

What does a Modbus energy meter integration involve?

Intellicon connects Modbus RTU or Modbus TCP energy meters to the BMS or monitoring platform via a gateway or direct serial connection. The meter register map is reviewed and confirmed against the target monitoring software. All data points are tested and signed off at commissioning.

Do you provide the BACnet or Modbus gateways?

Yes. Intellicon supplies, programmes, and commissions the appropriate protocol gateway (e.g. Tridium JACE, FieldServer, or similar). Gateway selection depends on the existing controller types, network topology, and client software platform.

What is a BACnet point list and why is it important?

A BACnet point list maps every physical input/output and software object in the system — giving each a unique object identifier, name, engineering unit, and access level. It is the foundation of integration: without an agreed point list, sensors, setpoints, and alarms cannot be correctly connected to the BMS. Intellicon prepares or reviews the point list as part of every BMS integration project.
